A search is underway for three missing mountaineers north of Squamish.
The trio of experienced climbers went up Mount Atwell Friday afternoon and have not been heard from since, according to Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR).
Squamish SAR’s BJ Schute tells CityNews they were alerted Friday evening to assist.
“We have our operate under the assumption that it’s still an active search at this point, but we haven’t had any contact with them,” Chute said.
“These were experienced mountaineers, not just passive hikers, so they are quite capable to be in the technical terrain in which we believe they are in,” .
Chute says the search has been suspended right now due to inclement weather in the extremely remote and difficult area.
They add they have not made any contact with the mountaineers, but are treating this like an active rescue mission.
CityNews is expecting an update from RCMP later this afternoon.
