Surrey RCMP warns of ‘dangerous sex offender’ living in city

The Surrey RCMP has issued a public interest notification, telling residents that a “dangerous sex offender” has moved into the city.

Michal Popek was convicted of sexually assaulting four women between 2015 and 2016. Mounties say the 44-year-old “poses a risk to adolescent girls and adult women, including strangers.”

The RCMP says Popek has received a One Chance Statutory Release, before his sentence is set to be complete in December 2025. After that time, he will be subject to a 10-year Long Term Supervision Order.

Mounties explain the man is bound by several conditions as part of the terms of his release. They include:

  • Not to consume, purchase or possess alcohol;
  • Not to consume, purchase or possess drugs other than prescribed medication taken as prescribed and over the counter drugs taken as recommended by the manufacturer;
  • Not to attend any business where the primary source of income is derived from the sale of alcohol;
  • Not to attend any business where the primary source of income is derived from the sale of cannabis;
  • Not to be in the company of sex trade workers/escorts;
  • Observe a curfew from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am except for employment or educational purposes and only with the written permission of the parole supervisor.

Police say Popek will be monitored by police and by electronic monitoring.

He is described as being 5″5″ and 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and with short, brown hair.

The Surrey RCMP is asking anyone who sees Popek in violation of his conditions to call 9-1-1 right away.
