Car plows into ocean off West Vancouver after crash with Bentley

The driver and passenger of a Volkswagen are recovering after ending up in the ocean off West Vancouver after a crash Monday.

The West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD) says the incident happened just after 12 p.m. along Marine Drive, just east of Sharon Drive.

“On police arrival, it was discovered that one vehicle had left the roadway and fallen into the ocean. Fortunately, both occupants were able to remove themselves safely and were not seriously injured,” the WVPD said in a statement to CityNews.

Police say the West Vancouver Fire Department is now working to recover the car from the water.

“We are grateful that no one was seriously hurt,” said Sgt. Chris Bigland. “And we thank those who stopped to assist with the rescue efforts and the police investigation”.

Images posted to social media site Reddit show the black Volkswagen Golf submerged in the water with its windows down, airbags deployed, and someone in the water helping the occupants out of the vehicle.

Another image shows a black Bentley Bentayga on the right-hand side of the road, facing the water, with significant front-end damage.

The WVPD is asking anyone who has not yet spoken to police and has information about the crash to call the department’s non-emergency line.
