IIO recommends charges against two Surrey police officers in 2023 incident

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is recommending that two police officers — one with the Surrey Police Service and one with the Surrey RCMP — be charged in an incident that took place last year.

On June 18, 2023, police were called to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 100th Avenue parking lot of the Green Timbers Urban Forest.

The vehicle — a green Hyundai Elantra — was then involved in a collision at the intersection of 100th Avenue and 140th Street. The driver of the car was taken into custody soon afterwards and then taken to hospital where the driver found to have sustained injuries.

After an investigation, the IIO determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe the two officers may have committed “offences related to grounds to pursue and driving offences.”

The BC Prosecution Service now has to determine whether or not to move forward with the recommendation.
