Vancouver police are investigating after the Canucks jerseys that have been worn by the English Bay Laughing Men statues were found burnt Wednesday morning.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says it appears to have happened overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
“This is disappointing to see, especially when everyone is coming together to cheer on the Canucks and enjoy a positive playoff run,” said Sgt. Steve Addison in a social media post.
It’s unclear if the jerseys on the statues were burned by disgruntled Canucks fans. But, the incident comes after Vancouver lost Game 4 of their second-round playoff series to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night.
Head Coach Rick Tocchet did not hold back and openly slammed some of his players following the 3-2 loss.
“We need five or six guys to get going here. It’s the Stanley Cup playoffs,” said a frustrated Tocchet. “We can’t play with 12 guys. We [have] got to figure it out quick. We need more consistent effort from more guys.”
The playoff series is now tied at 2-2, with the Canucks and Oilers returning to Vancouver for Game 5 on Thursday.
