Community support blooms for North Van flower shop after devastating week

Special Moments Flowers & Gifts has reopened just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, after an accident forced it to close for several days.

Owner Jennifer Sullivan says it has been an emotional week since an intoxicated driver hit a car and sent it flying through the front of her shop.

Sullivan says the outpouring of support from the community has helped her reopen so quickly.

“People I don’t know but who know my store that live in the area and want to help… I had people help clear away the glass,” she siad.

“They showed up at my door on the first day when we started to clean things. Other merchants in the mall showing up with treats and well wishes… I had someone offer to put up glass so we get a little light inside.”

She says a florist from Surrey even started a GoFundMe to help her cover costs.

“Insurance doesn’t cover anything, and being closed for four days during the biggest week of the year has been a challenge,” she said.

Shop workers are busy putting flower arrangements together this Mother’s Day weekend, and members of the community came out to check on the store.

“It was very sad when I heard about the car accident, and I didn’t think they would be open today,” said customer Maria Lulianella.

“So we came by and they are, so that’s very special, because they are very much part of this community.”
