It is already starting to feel like summer across some parts of the province, and the BCSPCA is out with some tips to keep your furry companions safe ahead of the season.
First and foremost, the organization says pets should have constant access to shade and clean, cool water during warm weather. As well, walking pets during cooler times of the day can help keep your pal’s paws from burning on hot pavement.
Pet owners should learn to recognize the signs of heatstroke, which can include excessive panting, drooling, agitation, and increased heart rate.
It also says to make sure your pets are up to date on vaccinations if you are planning to take them on a hike or camping trip. This is important to protect them from diseases they may come across outdoors, such as rabies or leptospirosis.
Bug bites are also a concern, as tick bites and bee stings can transmit life-threatening bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
And the organization reminds all owners to never leave an animal alone in a hot vehicle, even for a short amount of time.
“Owners and caretakers may believe they’re doing their furry friend a favour when bringing them along on errands, but if they can’t bring their pet into a store, they may think a few minutes in the vehicle won’t be a big deal,” the BCSPCA said.
