Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes named Norris Trophy finalist

As was widely expected, Vancouver Canucks Captain Quinn Hughes has been named a James Norris Memorial Trophy finalist.

Hughes joins Nashville Predators defenceman Roman Josi and Colorado Avalanche D-man Cale Makar.

The 24-year-old led the NHL in scoring from a defenceman in the regular season, also setting a Canucks franchise record.

In his first season as captain, Hughes had 75 assists and 92 points.

Not only were many anticipating that Hughes would be nominated for the Norris — he’s widely expected to win.

The NHL explains the James Norris Memorial Trophy is “awarded to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.”

The trophy is in memory of the late James Norris, who was an owner and president of the Detroit Red Wings.

Hughes isn’t the only Canuck to be nominated for an award this year. Starting goaltender Thatcher Demko was announced Monday as a Vezina Trophy finalist.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Rick Tocchet is expected to be nominated for the Jack Adams Award for his role in helping turn the team around.
