Vancouver is a hotspot for celebrity sightings and May will be no different with so many Hollywood movies and shows starting production this month.
From a new film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt to Ella Purnell and Melanie Lynskey reprising their roles in Yellowjackets for Season 3, Vancouver is swarming with big-name stars.
With so many celebrities currently on the West Coast, you should keep an eye out for your favourite celeb next time you go out to a restaurant, go for a hike or just while walking down a city street.
Here’s what’s filming in Vancouver this month and all the celebrities tied to each project.
The Smashing Machine
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt are teaming up for a new film that starts production in May.
The A24 MMA biopic The Smashing Machineis based on the story of Mark Kerr, “the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career,” according to Variety.
Johnson will star as Kerr in the film and Blunt will play Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples.
The Rock has been training for the film and has shared updates with his fans on social media.
The film will be directed by Benny Safdie and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2025.
Eternity
According to Deadline, Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner will star in a new rom-com Eternity that’s set to start filming in Vancouver.
The A24 film, directed by David Freyne, is said to be about a group of people who must decide who they want to spend eternity with.
The Wedding Banquet
Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone and comedian Bowen Yang will star in a remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 film The Wedding Banquet, as reported by Variety.
According to the outlet, the film follows what happens when Min’s boyfriend Chris rejects his marriage proposal and Min convinces his best friend Angela to marry him instead while promising to pay for her partner’s IVF treatments in exchange for his green card. The storyline gets even more complicated when Min’s grandmother visits him from Seoul to surprise them with a Korean wedding banquet.
The film is slated to be released in 2025.
Yellowjackets Season 3
The thriller drama series Yellowjackets is about to begin filming its third season.
The show, which follows a group of high school soccer players who survive a plane crash and how their lives turn out 25 years later, stars big-name celebs like Fallout’s Ella Purnell, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Melanie Lynskey.
In an interview with People, Lynskey says the writers of the show gave her a couple of huge “exciting” spoilers.
“Last season there was such a quick turnaround and it felt the conversation with [the writers] about the season happened partway through the season,” Lynskey told People. “So now to be talking before the season’s even begun and they have everything mapped out, it’s just super exciting.”
Seasons 1 and 2 of Yellowjackets are streaming on Paramount+.
The Last of Us Season 2
Production on Season 2 of the HBO series The Last Of Us has been underway in B.C. since the beginning of 2024.
Fans have shared several locations where they spotted the series filming, including in North Vancouver, Langley, Mission and Kamloops.
In March, Gabriel Luna, who plays Joel’s brother Tommy in the show, revealed that part of the upcoming season would also be filmed in Alberta, which is where Season 1 was filmed.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are set to reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie in Season 2.
Danny Ramirez, Isabela Merced, Catherine O’Hara, and Kaitlyn Dever, have also joined the cast for the upcoming season.
Filming of Season 2 is scheduled to wrap up in August.
Laid Season 1
Joy Ride actress Stephanie Hsu is set to star in the new comedy series Laid.
The Peacock show is based on the Australian series of the same name and follows a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways, according to Variety. The woman then goes back through her sex timeline to “confront her past in order to move forward.”
No other cast members or premiere date have been announced yet.
Tron: Ares
Disney shared some exciting news about Tron: Ares as the film begins wrapping up production in Vancouver.
On April 29, Disney shared that Jeff Bridges has returned to the grid, meaning we can expect to see him in the new film when it comes out in 2025.
Tron: Ares also stars Jared Leto, Gillian Anderson, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
The third film in the sci-fi franchise will follow Ares (played by Leto) who is a fictional character that crosses over from the world of video games to planet Earth.
Leto was spotted around downtown Vancouver filming various scenes for the movie over the past few months.
Happy Face Season 1
You might spot Dennis Quaid in Vancouver this month as he shoots his new Paramount+ series Happy Face.
The eight-episode first season will tell the story of Melissa Jesperson-Moore (played by Annaleigh Ashford), who at age 15 discovered her father Keith Hunter Jesperson (played by Quaid), was a serial murderer known as the Happy Face killer, according to an IMDb description.
The series is inspired by a podcast of the same name, the real-life story of Melissa Moore, and Moore’s autobiography Shattered Silence, as perThe Hollywood Reporter.
Happy Face will premiere on Paramount+ in 2025, Variety reports.
Watson Season 1
CBS has a new Sherlock Holmes type show in the works.
The new series Watson is a medical drama that focuses on Dr. John Watson a year after the death of his friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Morris Chestnut will star as Watson, a character who resumes his career as the head of a clinic that treats rare disorders.
The Hollywood Reporter says the show will premiere sometime in 2024 or 2025.
