The snow that weather forecasters warned of for Vancouver finally arrived over the weekend, and some passengers at YVR Airport are experiencing travel headaches because of it.
YVR posted numerous delays and cancellations for arriving flights on Monday, ranging from major carriers to regional airlines.
This is what the situation looked like for some arriving flights on Monday afternoon:
Departures are faring better, though some cancellations have popped up throughout the day.
YVR told Daily Hive that while it has activated its snow response program, “delays are possible.
“Snow continues to be in the forecast along with cold and windy conditions across the region, including at YVR. Safety and security are our top priorities, and we are closely monitoring weather and managing to the conditions,” said Kate Macrae, communications specialist for the Vancouver Airport Authority. “We have activated our snow response program. This includes additional staffing and equipment mobilized both in the terminal and on our airfield.
“Airfield crews will be clearing snow and ice from runways, taxiways, and aprons, and ensuring aircraft are de-iced as needed. While we aim to keep flights moving, inclement weather may reduce airfield capacity, and delays are possible.”
According to YVR’s Operational Snapshot, the current On-Time Performance: Departures percentage is 63.89%. Over 72,000 daily passengers are also expected today at the airport.
“We are working closely with NAV CANADA and airlines to manage arrivals and departures based on the weather we are experiencing in Vancouver,” added Macrae. “Please note that seasonal weather elsewhere can also affect flight schedules.
“Passengers are encouraged to check the latest flight status at yvr.ca or with their airline before coming to the airport and to plan ahead for their trip, including arriving at the airport early.”
Snowfall at Vancouver International Airport has really picked up in the last 30 mins. Very low visibility now. ❄️
