Incoming snowstorm postpones Highway 99 closures for removal of Steveston Highway crossing

The provincial Ministry of Transportation says it has postponed the overnight closures on Highway 99 in Richmond due to wintry weather sweeping the Lower Mainland Friday.

While Friday is on the warmer side of the incoming storm, 1130 NewsRadio meteorologist Michael Kuss says it’ll get windy into the afternoon when the rain tapers off and the arctic air starts to settle in over the region.

The consistent snowfall will come on Saturday and again early Sunday, Kuss says, “with the bullseye for a serious snow-maker coming in late Sunday into the Monday morning commute.”

Originally, crews were scheduled to close the highway overnight over the weekends as they work to dismantle and remove the old Steveston Highway crossing.

Instead, the ministry says, they’ll start next weekend.

The work will now run for the following weekends:

  • Feb. 7 to Feb. 10;
  • Feb. 21 to Feb. 24;
  • and Feb. 28 to March 3.

The closures start Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m., and Sundays from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Mondays.

During the closures, drivers will be detoured using the highway’s on- and off-ramps.

“There will be no impact to traffic during the week,” the Ministry said in a statement earlier this week. “Drivers are asked to use caution through any detours and obey the construction zone speed limit.”
