The world’s first active gaming facility has finally arrived in Metro Vancouver, and local gamers should get ready to work up a sweat.
Activate Coquitlam officially opened its doors to the public on Tuesday near the intersection of Lougheed Highway and King Edward Street.
The 9,756 sq ft gaming centre is the Winnipeg-based company’s first location in BC, and it’s filled with immersive challenges, high-tech visuals, and surprises for guests to discover.
“We’re beyond excited to see Coquitlam dive into this one-of-a-kind, high-octane experience,” said Adam Schmidt, CEO of Activate, in a release.
Guests will register for an Activate account upon arrival, which will be linked to an RFID wristband for use during their gaming session. They can then stash their belongings in a locker and change into activewear in the changerooms.
There are 10 different game rooms to explore during your 60 or 90-minute timeslot, each with a unique physical and mental challenge to conquer.
Mega Grid features over 500 touch-sensitive LED floor tiles and light-up wall buttons, which will require you to show off your speed, coordination and communication skills.
Strike has your team blast off into space to try and stop asteroids from hitting you. The co-op game has 32 HD monitors, 66 touch-sensitive screens and two projectors to beam all of the action.
To become a super-spy, head into the Laser room and try to make it through the glowing maze unscathed.
Guests can even live out their Hoops dreams while answering trivia to score points.
Your electronic wristband tracks your progress so that you can level up and earn prizes and rewards across multiple visits. Of course, extra bragging rights for those whose name makes it on the giant leaderboard for all to see.
Each activity will take a few minutes to complete and is set for two to five players, though players can swap teams during their visit if they are in a larger group. They can also ramp up the difficulty if they’re feeling confident.
Guests won’t want to forget to pose for a group photo to commemorate all the high scores and achievements.
Activate has grown to nearly 40 locations across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with other international destinations including Dubai. The Canadian company also plans to open new European locations, including in Germany, Norway, and Switzerland.
Gamers can choose a 60-minute session for $28 plus tax or a 90-minute visit for $38 plus tax from Monday to Sunday. To celebrate its grand opening, Activate is offering free admission of one entry per person from January 28 until February 3, while spots last. Guests can book their visit online.
