Will Vancouver Canucks trade Boeser? Other teams are expecting it

The Vancouver Canucks roster could look very different in just a few months. Several major pieces are reportedly on the trade block, including pending unrestricted free agent Brock Boeser.

The 27-year-old sniper is one of the most beloved Canucks but league sources believe he’ll be available ahead of the March 7 trade deadline per Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson.

Boeser has 16 goals and 33 points in 42 games so far. He scored an eye-popping 40 goals last year and has been averaging 0.45 goals per game since the start of the 2023-24 season, firmly establishing himself as a top-six scoring winger.

Despite the solid numbers over the past two seasons, it’s not hard to understand why the Canucks would consider trading Boeser. He’ll need a new contract this summer and will be looking for a massive extension. Hockey consulting company AFP Analytics projects his next deal will be for $8.76 million per season over seven years.

That projected contract would make him the second-highest-paid player on the club, a deal the Canucks may not feel comfortable agreeing to.

Boeser is not the fastest skater, and there are concerns that, with age, his speed will fall even further. He’s also struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, only playing 80 games for the first time last year.

General manager Patrik Allvin has remained noncommittal when asked about negotiations with Boeser, which, by all reports, have remained relatively quiet.

“We’re still evaluating him,” the GM said during his midseason press conference. “I have a great relationship with his agent, and when the time is right, we’ll make the decision.”

“There’s two sides of it too. It’s got to work for both sides long term. Anything can happen here, I guess, any day.”

The Canucks have won two straight games, their first back-to-back wins since December 1, and are inching closer to a playoff spot. While they haven’t inspired a ton of confidence this season, a long winning streak could cause the club to reassess their plans. Until that happens, though, it appears like Boeser will be one of the premier names available at the deadline and his days with the team could be numbered.
