An embarrassed Jeopardy! contestant could not go on after he missed a question about Celine Dion.
In a clip shared on Instagram, host Ken Jennings asked journalist Drew Goins who he’d like to thank in the episode’s opening segment. “Who would you like to thank, Drew?” asked Jennings.
Goins didn’t miss an opportunity to declare himself a fan of Celine Dion.
“I owe so much to so many people, but in the second chance tournament, I thanked my competitors. I’d like this time to thank Aiden, Jay, Joey, and Jen,” he said. “And then, John the producer suggested, long story, that I thank Celine Dion. So, thank you, Celine Dion.”
“Does she know what she did?” Jennings asked.
“Oh, she does. Deep down,” said Goins.
But little did he know that his fan knowledge would soon be tested.
Under the category “90’s number one hits,” one contestant picked a question for $2,000.
“Sharing its title with an earlier, more upbeat Huey Lewis hit, it was number one for Celine Dion in 1994,” stated Jennings.
The clue left the contestants completely stumped, but the question put the self-declared Dion fan in the spotlight.
Goins struggled to find the words as he touched his forehead in frustration.
“Uh-oh,” teased Jennings. “Oh, she’s going to be mad, Drew.”
Smiling, Goins then pretended to walk off the stage to laughter. He quickly returned and hugged fellow contestant Mehal Shah.
“It’s alright, man,” assured Shah.
Jennings then provided the answer to the question that everyone missed, stating, “Like Huey Lewis, Celine Dion sang a song called ‘The Power of Love.’”
In fairness, Goins did have an excuse for missing Dion’s version of the song, which was released in 1993.
“I was born in 1994!” he argued.
The moment had viewers in stitches.
“You just can’t make this up; I laughed so hard,” wrote one commenter.
Another stated, “Of all my years of watching Jeopardy!, this was the best moment EVER!”
Despite the incident, Goins seems determined to prove his loyalty to the Canadian singer.
In the comments, he wrote, “I swear to mon Dieu, @celinedion, I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you.”
