Up to 1,500 Seattle cyclists are biking to Vancouver for a party this summer

Cyclists from Seattle are planning a massive bike ride to Vancouver later this year, culminating in a big party after travelling over 300 kilometres.

The annual event, which sold out in 2023 and 2024, takes place this August and will see a large influx of riders crossing the BC/Washington border into Vancouver over a two-day period.

Cascade Bicycle Club is organizing the event, which is called “Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party.”

The event is capped at 1,500 riders and begins at the University of Washington, ending at David Lam Park in Vancouver. If you were to drive that route, it would take approximately two and a half hours. Google Maps says that the journey on a bike would take over 14 hours.

There’s also an elevation gain of over 6,700 metres. The thought alone is making our legs hurt.

The schedule for the event says it starts on August 23 at 6:30 am. Thankfully, the Seattlites can get a shuttle back the next day.

Cyclists who might not make it all the way are encouraged to use the “SkyTrain light rail system.”

“For RSVP riders, there are two stations on the Millennium Line near the Port Moody rest stop that are convenient. Taking this line shaves off the last 15 miles. Bikes are permitted on SkyTrain, but you’ll have to purchase your own ticket to ride. You’ll also have to transfer onto the Expo Line to make the last part of the trip into the city of Vancouver.”

Cyclists will be well-supported with rest stops, food, and a medical team. A team from the Cascade Bicycle Club will also help with things like flats and other repairs.

“Medics, firefighters, police officers, nurses, and doctors volunteer to ride RSVP as members of the Medical Team. These volunteers are identified by red medical team jerseys or helmet covers.”

While it might be quite a bit of time away, this is your warning that traffic could be messy that weekend.
