Could Donald Trump help BC stop the yearly time change?

BC residents have been teased with the possibility of stopping the yearly time change for several years now, but Donald Trump, yes, Trump, has a chance to be the person who finally makes it happen.

Late last week, in a post on X, Trump declared that the Republican Party would use its best efforts “to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!”

If you’ve been out of the time loop, BC has been in a battle against the yearly time changes since late BC Premier John Horgan was in power. Premier David Eby also supports the move but points to the same reasons as to why we haven’t made the change yet: alignment with America.

The legislation for the move dates all the way back to Halloween in 2019.

“The Province has introduced the interpretation amendment act to allow for a future move to permanent daylight saving time (DST) after 93% of British Columbian respondents indicated support for the change in a record-breaking public engagement,” the BC Ministry of Attorney General said.

BC’s main hurdle was the need to wait for a few West Coast American states to align so all the regions involved could make the change together.

“The move to year-round DST is planned to be brought into effect at a time that maintains alignment with Washington, Oregon, California and Yukon, which are all in the process of creating or enacting similar legislation,” the ministry added.

There has been some legislative movement in states like California toward the shared goal of keeping things at one time year-round.

A report from CBS News earlier this year said that California State Senator Roger Niello is collaborating with other leaders from Oregon and Washington to say adios to the time change.

“If my legislation prevails next November, we’ll turn them back again, and we’ll never change them again after that,” the CBS report stated.

So, it could be that the bold Trump might be able to force this through, saving BC residents the hassle and potential health impacts of switching the clocks back and forth every year. Or maybe he’ll simply take credit for what has already been in motion for several years.

The next time we’ll have to adjust the time is March 2025, when we move our clocks one hour forward. Are you one of the many who are sick of the yearly time change? Let us know in the comments.
