A GoFundMe has been started to help raise funds for the family of a BC woman who died in Squamish this past week.
Authorities were notified that a wingsuit BASE jumper had crashed into the trees on Stawamus Chief on Thursday, November 5.
Though Squamish Search and Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services paramedics and Squamish RCMP police officers all attended the scene, the base jumper was located deceased on site.
Friends have identified the woman as Katelyn “Compton” Escott from Wells, BC, and have launched a fundraiser in her memory to assist her family.
“As you may know, we lost our friend Compton on December 5,” wrote the GoFundMe organizer Catherine Vaillancourt Roy. “She lived her life to the fullest and died doing what she loved in her favourite place on Earth.”
Escott was a former member of the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association on the wingsuit team and a former member of the Barriere Volunteer Fire Department.
Almost $12,000 has been raised in the fundraiser as of press time.
“We want to support her family during this difficult time so that they can grieve without worrying about financial costs. We hope that these funds to cover the costs of her cremation and her family’s travel and missed work.”
Friends also created a Katelyn Compton Escott Memorial group on Facebook with the goal of compiling memories of the beloved friend to collect in a future book.
“What a rad, selfless, down to earth chick,” a friend wrote in the memorial. “Truly one of a kind and such a huge loss to the community.”
“Her badass mentality never ended, she knew no bounds,” added another.
