The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) is investigating a tragic incident after an eight-year-old boy died following a collision with a snow plow.
According to the BCHP, a collision between a snow plow dump truck and a green Kia SUV killed the eight-year-old boy, and it is hoping for witnesses and dashcam footage to learn how it happened.
The incident took place on December 7, 2024, just after 8 am on Highway 3 outside of Castlegar. At the time, road conditions were cold and icy with freezing rain.
BCHP says a pedestrian also sustained life-altering injuries after being hit by the Kia, which spun away from the dump truck. The pedestrian is a 57-year-old Castlegar man who stopped to assist another vehicle that had driven into a ditch.
“BC Highway Patrol has already spoken to multiple witnesses, but for obvious reasons, we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with the BC Highway Patrol in a media release.
“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snow plow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash.”
The boy who passed was in a green Kia SUV with his five-year-old brother and their 44-year-old stepfather, who was the one driving. The brother and stepfather suffered minor physical injuries. The family lives in the Nelson area.
BCHP said the snow plow driver is a 65-year-old man from the Castlegar area who “appears to be unhurt.”
