Metro Vancouver drivers are used to seeing strange things on the road, but one particular parking situation in Burnaby has left many scratching their heads and wondering about the rules.
In a video shared to a Facebook driving group, which Daily Hive obtained permission to use, we see the situation unfold from the perspective of a driver’s dashcam footage.
As the dashcam driver is heading forward, we see a car turning right. The car turning right decides to turn on the sidewalk, stopping in front of a business.

According to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, “A driver must not drive on a sidewalk, walkway or boulevard, except when entering or leaving a driveway or lane or when entering or leaving land adjacent to a highway, or by permission granted under a bylaw.”
The City of Vancouver’s driving bylaws are similar. They tell drivers not to stop or park on sidewalks or sidewalk crossings. Burnaby, where the video was taken, also has nearly the same rules about keeping sidewalks clear of obstructions.
In the Facebook group where the Burnaby parking video was shared, some debated whether or not the person was acting within their rights.
“It looks like private property to me. They are well back from the public sidewalk and are clearly not hindering pedestrians on the public walkway,” one comment on the video said.
Others quickly pointed out that the sidewalk is not private property.
“The enablers in this group trying to rationalize this s**t is epic,” another commenter said.
One other Facebook user chimed in, “I’d rather them do this instead of stopping on the road with their hazards on.”
Someone else tried to give the driver the benefit of the doubt, suggesting that it might have been a work vehicle on the job.
