AI can now predict the day you’re going to die

If you’ve ever wondered exactly how long you’ve got to live, a new app claims to give you a second-by-second countdown for just US$40 a year.

Driving the news: A new AI-powered longevity app, aptly named Death Clock, promises to predict the precise day of users’ deaths based on their health data. The service, which launched in July, has already been downloaded 125,000 times, per Bloomberg.

  • The app — which is trained on the longevity studies of over 53 million people — also provides lifestyle suggestions for users on how they can extend their lifespan.

Why it matters: More accurate life expectancy calculations might seem grim, but for governments, companies, and retirees who have to make crucial financial decisions based on longevity, more precise estimates could be a game-changer.

  • Another AI model in Denmark has proven to be 11% more accurate at predicting people’s deaths based on their health data than any current system used to price life insurance policies.

Zoom out: Insurance companies are already using AI to analyze medical scans and data from wearable health trackers. By tracking live data, some companies can even adjust premiums for life insurance policies based on behaviour that’s deemed unhealthy.
