Train cuts off only road access to Surrey’s Crescent Beach for hours

A frustrating morning for residents in Surrey’s Crescent Beach community on Friday after a train stalled on the tracks for hours, blocking access to the beachside community by car.

The area has two road entrances, including from Ocean Park’s Crescent Road, and social media reports were that that route was backed up with extensive traffic delays due to the blockage since 8:30 am. Just before 11 am, there was news that the issue had been resolved and service would resume.

According to Amtrak, the issue was with train 517, which was experiencing mechanical issues en route to Bellingham from Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station. However, locals report that the issue was blamed on the BNSF freight train. Daily Hive has reached out for comment.

For passengers on the passenger train, the new arrival time in Seattle will be 1:48 pm, two hours later than originally scheduled.

Many shared on social media that the lack of road access to the community remains a concern in the rare event that a train does stall on the tracks, as first responders would be prevented from getting to the area unless they were to go on foot under the train at the Crescent Beach Marina, down Sandy Trail, or by boat. Access from 24 Avenue has been shuttered due to repairs to the overhead pedestrian walkway.
