Located just across the street from the Vancouver Public Library is a brand-new sandwich shop that’s getting ready to open its doors, and Dished got a sneak peek inside.
Founded by Dom and Frank Morra (who also own Via Tevere Pizzeria, Il Saltimbocca, and Straight Outta Brooklyn Pizza, which is located next door), Dante Italian Sandwich is a new 16-seat sandwich joint serving up a line of no-nonsense tasty sandwiches stacked with classic Italian meats, cheese, and veggies.
Dante uses a special type of bread for its sandwiches called schiacciata, which is made in-house and is like a thinner and crispier focaccia-style bread.
As for ingredients, it all just comes down to fresh and tasty Italian meats and veggies.
During our visit, we tried two of Dante’s sandwich creations: the Italiana and the Mortazza.
The Italiana is the perfect sandwich for any prosciutto lover (which is almost everyone who eats meat). Alongside the pile of prosciutto crudo, this handheld features truffle mayo, stracciatella cheese, and arugula. Prepare for a hefty sandwich because just one of these handhelds was almost the size of our face.
The Mortazza, on the other hand, was a similar sandwich with mortadella, stracciatella cheese, basil mayo, arugula, and pistachio crumble for an extra layer of crunch.
“We’re incredibly excited to expand our restaurant family this fall with the opening of Dante Italian Sandwich,” said co-founder Dom Morra. “Fresh-baked schiacciata sandwiches are a staple in Tuscany and we’re excited to introduce this beloved Italian street food to Vancouver diners.”
The menu features seven of these signature sandwiches served on schiacciata bread and available for take-out or dine-in. Additionally, there are three grilled options, including an elevated formaggi grilled cheese served with mozzarella, provolone, and taleggio. There’s also a fresh arugula salad and a small selection of Italian desserts available.
