“High risk”: Man who stabbed tourist in a Tim Hortons to reside in Vancouver

David Morin, a 30-year-old man who was convicted of aggravated assault in 2022 after he stabbed someone at a cafe, is set to be released and will reside at a Vancouver halfway house.

The Vancouver Police Department announced the news in a media release, adding that he poses a high risk of significant harm to the community.

“Compelling circumstances exist to warn the public that he will be living in Vancouver.”

On January 22, 2022, Morin stabbed a Mexican tourist inside a Tim Hortons in downtown Vancouver near SFU Harbour Centre. VPD arrested him days later, and he was sentenced to three years in jail in June 2022.

VPD was informed that Morin was granted a statutory release by Correctional Service Canada and, while on parole, will be allowed to live in downtown Vancouver.

Morin is 6’3 with a medium build, short black hair, and brown eyes.

As part of his release, there have been several conditions placed on Morin, including the following:

  • Not to consume, purchase or possess alcohol and drugs other than over-the-counter drugs
  • Not to associate with anyone involved in criminal activity
  • Not to have any contact with the victim
  • Not to possess any knives, except for the preparation/consumption of food or lawful employment purposes
  • Must report intimate sexual/non-sexual relationships with females to his parole supervisor

VPD asks anyone who observes Morin breaching those conditions to contact police immediately.

Many, including a Vancouver city councillor, have shared their shock on social media in response to the news.

“Outrageous that this person is out in the community two years after nearly stabbing a Mexican tourist to death at a downtown Tim Hortons,” Peter Meiszner said on X.

“Wait, what?” another X user said.

The news has also led to much reaction on the Vancouver subreddit.

One Redditor said, “Why is someone who [has] stabbed somebody out in under 2 years?”
