More than a dozen BC-based dynamic and progressive companies have been named among Canada’s Top 100 Employers in the annual ranking from Mediacorp Canada Inc., published in The Globe and Mail.
Simon Fraser University, which employs 3,500 people, received an A+ for its work environment, which is uniquely situated on top of Burnaby Mountain. Plus, it was recognized for its benefits including healthcare.
“Simon Fraser University provides generous maternity and parental leave top-up payments for employees who are new mothers, fathers or adoptive parents (to 100% of salary for 35 weeks) — and employees can apply to extend their leave into an unpaid leave of absence,” the report reads in part.
North Vancouver’s Seaspan ULC apparently puts on one heck of a holiday party. Last year, it rented out BC Place for 3,000 guests, complete with a live orchestra. But that isn’t the only reason it ranked among the best. It has established a multimillion-dollar training program for Indigenous youth, offers a $1,000 recruitment bonus to existing employees, and has a hybrid work option.
Engineering company McElhanney Ltd. was named due to its “keep fit” mindset, which has led to subsidized memberships to fitness centres on location.
Computer programming company SAP Canada Inc., which is based in Vancouver, allows for flexible work times and “reimagining of space design for onsite work.”
Teck Resources Limited’s head office in Vancouver takes advantage of nearby offerings and offers a deal for employees to enjoy classes and the swimming pool at the adjacent YWCA fitness facility. Maybe even more attractive are the in-house and online training programs that allow for mining apprenticeships, internships, and mentoring.
On Vancouver Island, the British Columbia Investment Management Corp. (BCI) was named. “Employees are encouraged to take an active role in enriching the community with up to two paid days off to volunteer each year,” the report reads.
The BC Public Service in Victoria was mentioned thanks to its dedication to volunteering within the community, awarding outstanding employees, and offering parental leave top-up to its eligible 37,000 employees.
Rounding out the list are United Way British Columbia, Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd, Clio, ETRO Construction Ltd., and Interior Health Authority.
