Hide your kids if you got ’em because a “vigorous” storm is heading to most of Metro Vancouver, as a weather alert issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) takes effect Tuesday night.
ECCC forecasts “blustery” southeasterly winds of 70 km/h, which could reach 100 km/h.
Those winds are expected to ease by Wednesday morning, thanks to a Pacific frontal system moving over BC tonight and tomorrow.
In addition to the potentially damaging winds, up to 90 mm of rain could fall over parts of the region overnight. Based on the alerts issued by ECCC, rainfall will impact the Coquitlam and Maple Ridge areas, while heavy winds will be more of a problem in Richmond, Delta, and Surrey.
“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches,” ECCC says in its weather warning.
This is the second time ECCC has used the term “vigorous” to describe a storm in Metro Vancouver in just as many weeks. On November 4, ECCC referred to a vigorous frontal system that produced strong winds and heavy rain. That storm led to widespread power outages around Metro Vancouver and chaos on busy roads.
If this storm was anything like the previous one, you’ll want to get out and get your supplies and goods soon.
In addition to the heavy winds and rainfall, Vancouver could experience a thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon. According to the seven-day forecast, the clouds should dissipate on Friday as the sun makes a rare appearance for the week.
In preparation for the storm, the City of Vancouver is opening up additional shelter spaces beginning tonight.
Due to an extreme weather alert for heavy rainfall, additional shelter spaces will be available tonight, Nov. 12 to Wednesday, Nov. 13. Details below.
