Donald Trump was elected as the 47th president of the United States last week, and for many Americans, it felt like 2016 all over again.
Many were not thrilled with the election results and frantically began looking for relocation options. Canada has been a solid contender, just as it was eight years ago and again in 2022 when Roe v. Wade was overturned in the US.
Searches for the phrase “move to Canada” skyrocketed overnight, making headlines across North American media outlets.
Days after the re-election, Canadian real estate firm Royal LePage reported a record-breaking surge in the number of US visitors to its website.
A large spike in US visitors was observed in mid-June, following which Royal LePage continued to see a heightened number of US visitors. A 104% surge was observed week over week (67% year over year).
Another surge came on November 6, with American visitors exceeding 4,000.
“Data from Royal LePage shows that US-originated sessions on royallepage.ca spiked 52% in one day on Wednesday, November 6, following the election of Donald Trump for a second time,” noted the website in a release shared with Daily Hive.
“This marks the highest number of US users on the website year to date and one of several spikes in web traffic from American visitors recorded since the race for the White House kicked off this summer. Traffic on the website during the week of the election (Week 45, November 4 to 10) increased 70% year over year.”
In 2017, Royal LePage reported a similar spike following Trump’s first election win. Back then, US-originated sessions surged 329% the day following the election and climbed 210% year-over-year the week after his victory.
“Consistently ranking as one of the best countries in the world to live in, Canada continues to be a significant destination for international relocation, a fact unlikely to change in the years ahead,” said Phil Soper, president and chief executive officer of Royal LePage, in an email to Daily Hive on Tuesday.
“Canada’s relative political and social stability, high quality of life, and access to education and universal healthcare make it a highly attractive country for newcomers from Europe, Asia, and around the world. For Americans, the transition is even easier, considering the proximity and lack of a language barrier in most provinces.”
