5 injured, Hwy 1 closed westbound in Burnaby after 5-car crash: RCMP

Five people were injured and the westbound lanes of Highway 1 have been closed in Burnaby, B.C., after a five-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, police say.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj said two of the injured are in serious condition after the crash, which happened just east of the Kensington Avenue off-ramp at about 3 a.m. PT.

Kalanj said police have shut down all westbound lanes of the highway between Gaglardi Way and Sprott Street, and expect them to be closed possibly into Tuesday afternoon.

“[We] are advising commuters to plan an alternate route this morning,” Kalanj said in an email. “If they can work from home or delay the start of their work day, we suggest they do.”

Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
