“What the hell”: Yaletown fireworks show confused for pro-Trump celebration online

Were you kept up late last night due to an impromptu fireworks show in the heart of Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood?

Many took to social media to share their displeasure over the explosive sounds, which came around the same time that presidential candidate Donald Trump took to the podium for a victory speech.

“What the hell was that in yaletown? Is it gunshot or fireworks the heck?” one asked.

What and Why (in Yaletown)

“Insane amount of fireworks going off,” someone replied on Reddit.

“Just a selfish tech bro celebrating his Trump win without consideration for a single person around him. I want my sleep back. I’m furious. Let me have peace,” one person said.

That was the theory floated around on Reddit, where some felt the timing was way too coincidental and downright gross.

Others pointed out that the intention might have been far less controversial.

Some theories were that the fireworks were for Guy Fawkes night, which is on November 5 and celebrated in Great Britain with fireworks and bonfires (although the history of the night is far from celebratory).

“Guy fawkes night November 5th so I imagine its someone from the UK not wanting to miss out 🙂 People celebrate it a lot over here, lots of fireworks going off for like 5 – 6 hours come the evening of Nov 5th,” the Redditor said.

Others suggested it might be connected to Halloween and Diwali, which were both less than a week ago.

Or perhaps Canuck fanfare?

“Celebrating Pettersson scoring a goal last night,” one said.

But apparently, witnesses said they heard someone yelling.

“Nope, the guy was screaming literally ‘yay trump! Trump, trump, trump, another 4 years fuck yeah!’ So I’m pretty sure this wasn’t related to bonfire night unfortunately,” a Redditor shared.

While we weren’t able to confirm the motivation, we can at least say that whoever set off the fireworks near Yaletown Park did not suffer any repercussions.

Apparently, there were no calls to the police or fire regarding the fireworks.

According to Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, whoever it was didn’t have a permit or permission from the City of Vancouver.
