Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes took the high road after his historic 300th assist last night.
The always cool captain spoke to Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy after the Canucks 5-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Hughes picked up three assists on the night, including the 300th of his career, making him the third-fastest defenceman to ever reach that mark.
The 25-year-old beat incredible offensively gifted players like Paul Coffey to the milestone. The only blueliners to do it faster are the legendary Bobby Orr and Briafn Leetch.
Doing this faster than Paul Coffey is absolutely bonkers. pic.twitter.com/ytZug0q8xn

When talking with Murphy about the incredible achievement, the star took the high road. His answer didn’t include any notes about his own role in reaching the 300 assists mark at breakneck pace.
“I’m obviously very fortunate, it’s been a lot of fun playing here in Vancouver,” started Hughes. “I’ve made a lot of great friendships, and I’ve played with a lot of great players. There’s a lot of people who have contributed to that.”
One of Hughes’ assists last night was originally credited as a goal for the defenceman. Upon later review, it was changed to a helper for the blueliner as it was determined that Elias Pettersson got a piece of it with a tip.
The captain made sure to single out his teammate’s effort on the goal.

“I’m glad that Petey got that because that doesn’t go in without him standing in front,” said Hughes. “That was a great screen.”
“I just feel very fortunate. I’m lucky to have had the great teammates I’ve had, and it’s been a fun six years and hopefully to many more.”
Hughes won the first Norris Trophy in Canucks franchise history last year and has seemingly taken his game to another level since. He has 12 points in 11 games so far this season, and it looks like he’ll be in contention to repeat for the award.
