Close call: Vehicle stops dangerously close to a passing train in BC

A driver in Metro Vancouver filmed a terrifying moment while driving near a railway.

As Mark Christensen was driving in the Maple Ridge area, he pulled up to a railway crossing.

Despite signs, bells, and lights notifying drivers to yield to a passing train, a vehicle somehow stopped past the train crossing gate and right before the tracks.

Christensen filmed the incident and can be heard sarcastically reacting to the driver.

“Brilliant, absolutely brilliant,” he said as the train narrowly passed the vehicle ahead of him.

Christensen told Daily Hive the incident took place at the Hammond and 203 on Sunday, October 27, around 12:30 pm.

“[It was] just a really stupid place to stop,” he added.

Christensen’s video was shared in the Metro Vancouver Learns to Park and Drive Facebook group, where hundreds have reacted to the video, and more than 50 people have commented.

Barb Shutiak was one of the Facebook users who responded to the video and echoed many others’ worried concerns for the driver and train crew.

“My dad and his brothers were all railroaders on the CNR for decades. I’m sure the train crew were not happy,” he said. “The trauma from hitting a vehicle lasts forever. Watching an idiot like this one approach the tracks like that, not knowing if they’ll stop is terrible for the crew.”
