More than 70 temporary housing units to open in Chilliwack

A total of 73 new temporary housing units will soon open in Chilliwack, the provincial government announced April 15.

Work to add 30 new shelter beds in the Chilliwack Wellness Centre is almost complete, the province says. As well, construction of a new 43-unit modular housing will commence in the summer and is scheduled to be finished by fall.

“Through our HEARTH program, we are quickly developing these 73 units to move people into housing from shelters and free up indoor spaces in the community for more people sheltering outdoors,” said Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon.

“Through our Belonging in BC plan, it is our priority to connect people seeking shelter with housing options and supports that help them stabilize and transition to more secure housing.”

The modular housing will be located on Yale Road on the same site as the Travelodge Hotel. The province says the units will be prioritized for older adults who are experiencing homelessness or who are living in shelters. They will be built on an “underutilized” parking lot at the hotel, which was purchased in 2021 to be used as supportive housing.

The two projects are part of a $19 million housing investment by the B.C. government.
