Suspect in custody after man stabbed in throat, says Port Alberni RCMP

The Port Alberni RCMP says it was called out Tuesday after a man was stabbed in the throat.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., police responded to a 911 call at a home on Maitland Street near 14th Avenue.

When they got to the scene, they learned the suspect had fled on foot.

“Additional resources were called out to assist in the search for the suspect as Forensic Identification Services (FIS) conducted an examination of the scene,” the RCMP said.

“Port Alberni RCMP members tracked the suspect into the early morning hours the next day and he was arrested without issue.”

Police say the victim was taken to the nearby West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) by ambulance, but then had to be taken by helicopter to another hospital for emergency surgery.

“Fortunately, emergency staff at WCGH were able to stabilize the victim and provide life saving interventions locally,” Mounties said.

The victim and suspect are known to each other and there are no safety concerns, police say.

The suspect remains in custody awaiting a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 3.

The victim is in stable condition.
