A dog is safe and sound after it was rescued from the Cheakamus River Tuesday night.
Squamish Search and Rescue says it was called to help find the dog, Maverick, who fell into the river.
“Thanks to some nearby climbers who heard his barks, and the incredible assistance of @dragaflyinc’s thermal-sensing drone, we found Maverick tucked in a small cave just above the water,” the SAR team wrote Thursday.
The team says the rescue effort was quite technical, as it “involved navigating both swift water and very steep terrain.”
Despite these challenges, crews were able to lower technicians down to the dog, who was then brought back up to safety.
“Animal rescues like this one are typically self-funded by Squamish SAR,” the team wrote on Facebook. “As dog lovers, we just couldn’t turn this one down.”
The SAR group is thanking supporters for their contributions to ensure the team can “continue saving lives, both human and animal.”
