North Vancouver drivers hit with speeding fines

The need for speed landed three drivers with some pretty big fines in North Vancouver in recent days.

According to the RCMP, officers stopped one person on Highway 1 who was driving 161 kilometres in an 80 kilometre zone on Thursday. A day later, another driver was pulled over, this time for going 180 kilometres per hour in the same area.

The third big fine was issued later in the weekend, to someone driving 130 kilometres on Low Level Road, where the maximum speed is listed as 60 kilometres per hour.

Mounties say the area the third driver was nabbed in is a “very dangerous stretch,” noting the same section saw a fatal motorcycle crash just last month.

Two of the drivers were handed fines of $483 each for going 60 kilometres over the speed limit, while the third was fined $368 for going 40 kilometres over.

“At those speeds, you’re more likely to meet an officer than reach your destination,” the RCMP said in a social media post Monday.

“Speeding can cause serious injury or death, which is why our officers will continue to focus on education through enforcement.”

In addition to fines, speeding can also cost you points off your licence.

According to ICBC, “speeding is the top contributing factor to car crash fatalities in B.C.”
