Man arrested, charged after boat fire in Richmond, says RCMP

A man has been arrested for impaired operation of a vessel after a boat caught on fire near Richmond’s Garry Point Park Thursday, the RCMP says.

Staff Sgt. Gurbir Mondair tells 1130 NewsRadio police responded to reports of the situation shortly before 2:30 p.m.

“Information that we received was that two occupants had jumped into the water and were rescued by another another boat in the water at the same time,” Mondair said.

“Richmond RCMP, as well as other first responders, attended the scene. As a result of initial investigation, we arrested one individual for care and control of the vessel while intoxicated. That individual was released on an undertaking.”

Mondair says it isn’t clear how the fire started.

As well, he says, the incident is a good reminder to be safe while boating.

“Number one is, always wear a life jacket, always boat sober,” he said.

Also, make sure the boat has safety gear and sufficient fuel.

Mondair says boaters should consider taking a boating course, and remember you must have a pleasure craft operator card to operate a motorized boat.

As well, anyone on a boat should be aware of how the water temperature could affect their bodies.

“Cold water can severely impact anyone’s ability to swim and stay afloat,” he said.

“No matter your swimming ability, the best chance of survival, surviving an accident and cold water, is to wear a life jacket.”

Mounties aren’t able to confirm whether or not the man who was arrested was wearing a life jacket.

The investigation is ongoing.
