New West boardwalk amid fast-moving water from Chilcotin landslide

The boardwalk in New Westminster will be closed until further notice due to a high streamflow advisory stemming from the Chilcotin River landslide.

The city says fast-moving water and debris is expected in the Fraser River as a result of the overflow from the Chilcotin River dam.

“Please continue to exercise caution around the river as conditions may change suddenly. Boaters should also avoid the area if possible due to these safety concerns,” the city said in a notice Tuesday.

A landslide near Farwell Canyon, southwest of Williams Lake, blocked the Chilcotin River on July 30, creating a dam in the waterway that left a lake behind it.

The lake overflowed the landslide site on Monday, prompting concerns about the rush of water downstream and into the Fraser River.

A BC Emergency Alert was issued for the Chilcotin River from Hanceville to the Fraser River, as well as the Fraser River from the Chilcotin River to the Gang Ranch Road bridge.

The province said previously that an alert was also sent to cellphones, radios, and tvs to advise people in the area or along the water to leave “immediately due to flooding and debris.”

On Tuesday, the province said it expected pulses of water and sediment-laden water to work its way down the Fraser, reaching Hope by midday.
